Hmmm...I had hopes for this place; on the water, spa in the bathroom, sauna available a few feet away. Yes, it should have been nice...alas I was dissapointed. The service was mediocre at best. The room was nicely appointed but had a dishevelled look; as if they were scrimping on the niceties. At $550 for 2 nights I expect a little more. I arrived late and the room was chilly. The bed looked as if someone had been laying on it. Oh well. here was a nice deck and the moon was full, so I lit the gas fireplace (the only apparent source of heat) and sat outside looking at a full moon. It was rather nice, but the ocean wasn't in view only the river. As my honey was arriving later, I prepared the room to encourage a bit of romance; a lit candle, a flower on the bed, etc. (At this point, Gentle Reader, I shall leave the rest to your imagination).
Awakening the next morning I wandered over to the 'sumptuous' breakfast. We were'nt offered a choice, just something they had prepared beforehand (judging by the minute it took for it to be placed before me (It was an egg with spinach and hollandaise sauce, some small fruit bits, and an intriguingly hard blueberry muffin). This was not necessarily a problem, just small portioned. An older gentleman and his wife across the way, apparently on an anniversary excursion, requested bacon, but were told haughtily that this was a vegan breakfast. The elderly couple, having been properly admonished for deigning to request meat, went about their business. I, somewhat refreshed, headed back the 200yards to my waterfront room in search of the sauna facility---a main reason I chose the Jenner Inn in the firstplace.
Returning to the room, I found that it had been restored to it's best previous condition by the cleaning staff, but was chagrined that the bed sheets had not been changed---all to often lodging facilities harp on saving water (a river and ocean mind you yards away) and neglect to change bedding. Were I paying $49.95 perhaps I could understand, but at $275/night? I think not, particullarly considering that those unfortunate to grace this little Inn have undoubtedly come here for amore of the sort that may occur in bed, if you catch my drift.
Anyway, upon entering and taking the posted requested shower, I proceeded to effect a bit of steam. Unfortunately the ancient contraption seemed to have given up the ghost! I called the manager to effect a repair, and was told he would be down shortly. When he did arrive an hour and a half later, I was regaled with his travels to the Spa, which he had erroneously misheard me to say was malfunctioning. Off to the sauna we went, were the innkeeper jiggled this, and jiggled that, only to arrive at the same conclusion that I did; it wasn't working. He then looked up at me and inquired if I had any skill in fixing said sauna. I had to beg off and say that I didn't, that I was more in the habit of paying for such things. A hint that seemed to fly over his befuddled head. I, at this point, was still serenly patient. He assured me he would contact the maintenance person in charge of such things and would contact me with a progress report. I've yet to have a progress report or a sauna as of this writing; the plucky fellow either lied to me or became enamored with more pressing issues (considering the condition of the place I would suspect the latter).
Being intrepid, I was able to weather this inconvenient escapade and went about trying to enjoy my little vacation; it is just lodging, after all. The next morning, eschewing the proffered breakfast, I read a bit on the deck and prepared for my departure. I was mildly shocked when, unannounced, a chambermaid of unknown origin entered the room, only to find myself taking care of personal business in the bathroom. She seemed to apologize for her indiscretion, but, as I was unfamiliar with the language she spoke, I can only surmise her true intent. This was when I took my leave of the Jenner Inn---$550 dollars lighter and a tad bit wiser.
